The 42 km won by Lorenzo Lotti and Federica Moroni.
The words and blessing of Pope Francis, the prayer for peace by Monsignor Domenico Sorrentino and a sporting event that brought hundreds of runners, professionals and amateurs, to the start in Assisi, who crossed the Lands of Saint Francis to the spectacular finish line in front of the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli.
The first San Francesco Marathon, despite adverse weather up to an hour before the start, was a success in every respect. Let's start with the sporting one: over 2,000 registered participants in the Marathon, 10K and the Vieni con me walk, which saw the triumph, for the 42K, of the ultramarathon runner Lorenzo Lotti (Asd Berunners) who finished in 2 hours, 36 minutes and 54 seconds lit by a spectacular finish along the esplanade of the Basilica of S. M. Degli Angeli.

Behind him Federico Furiani (TX Fitness) at the finish line after 2 hours, 39 minutes and 6 seconds and the Ukrainian Evgenii Glyva (Asd Filippide/Avis C.Lago) who finished in 2 hours, 47 minutes and 8 seconds. Among women first overall Federica Moroni (G.S. Gabbi) at the finish line in 2 hours 55 minutes 35 seconds followed by Paola Salvatori (Us. Roma 83) in 2 hours 57 minutes 30 seconds and Cristina Mercuri (Atletica Winner Foligno) arrived at the finish line after 3 hours, 12 minutes and 34 seconds.

More than 700 finishers followed, who on Sunday morning, together with the hundreds of runners who ran the 10K, gathered in Assisi despite the rain in the early hours of the day. Bad weather that melted away half an hour before the start, transforming into splendid sunshine that accompanied the marathon runners along the route that connected the Seraphic City with Spello and Cannara, all the way back to Santa Maria degli Angeli.
SFM23, as mentioned, was also a great moment of spirituality. Pope Francis he sent his greetings hoping that the event could be "a providential occasion to promote human, Christian and Franciscan values that can provide sport with a soul and an ideal drive," the Pontiff wrote before giving his apostolic blessing and reminding that cooperation between people is necessary "to promote acceptance and solidarity".

The message was read by the bishop of the Diocese of Assisi, Gualdo Tadino and Nocera Umbra, Monsignor Domenico Sorrentino, who then launched his prayer for peace from the square of the Lower Basilica - during the blessing of the marathon runners - with his thoughts turned to the Holy Land. Remaining on the theme of solidarity and charity, at the start of the San Francesco Marathon, as announced by the organisers, namely Life Running Assisi and Kolorado, clothes donated by the runners were collected and will be distributed to people in fragile conditions.
At the same time, part of the registration proceeds will be donated to a number of charities working in the area and to the Santa Marta Paediatric Dispensary Foundation of the Vatican City.
The St. Francis Marathon is not only an athletic challenge, but also an experience that celebrates spirituality, faith and the deep meaning of the event. On the Saturday before the marathon, there is a special moment planned for all athletes, known as the 'Marathoner's Mass', which offers an opportunity for reflection, prayer and blessing.

Event details:
- Date: Saturday 4 November 2023
- Timetable: 18:00
- Location: Basilica of St Mary of the Angels
- Chaired by: H.E. Msgr. Domenico Sorrentino, Bishop of Assisi-Nocera Umbra-Gualdo Tadino and Foligno
- Participation of: Vatican Athletics
This significant event is a moment of unity and sharing for all athletes participating in the St. Francis Marathon. The Marathon runner's Mass will be presided over by H.E. Rev. Monsignor Domenico Sorrentino, Bishop of Assisi-Nocera Umbra-Gualdo Tadino and of Foligno, who will lead the congregation in prayers and bless the athletes' bibs.
Athletica Vaticana, a special partner of the event, will be present to make this moment even more special. Athletics and spirituality come together in this unique occasion, celebrating the importance of faith and commitment in the life of every athlete.
The Marathon Runner's Mass is an opportunity for athletes to find inspiration, renew their spirit and receive a special blessing before taking on the challenge of the marathon. It is a way to remember that running is much more than a physical competition; it is also a celebration of inner strength, determination and connection to something bigger than ourselves.
The entire community of athletes, together with their supporters, is invited to participate in this Marathon Mass. It is a moment of unity, reflection and sharing that makes the St. Francis Marathon a unique experience. Don't miss this opportunity to connect with your marathon spirit and receive a special blessing for your journey.

A first edition that is already a record-breaker: more than 1,700 participants, including professional runners, amateur runners and simple enthusiasts, will take part in the San Francesco Marathon 2023. The appointment with what is preparing to be one of the most popular running events at national level for this year is very close: at 9.30 a.m. on 5 November next, in Assisi, there will be the start of the first St Francis Marathonthe international sporting event that combines sport and spirituality under the single denominator of solidarity.
From the very beginning, in fact, the SFM project was designed to help others: part of the proceeds from the sale of the bibs will be donated to charities charity operating in the area and to the Santa Marta Paediatric Dispensary Foundation of the Vatican City. It is precisely the relationship with the Vatican that is special for the SFM: a long-standing collaboration with Athletica Vaticana - the first Sports Association established, and based, in the Vatican City State - which not by chance will have several of its athletes at the start. Staying on the charity theme, the organisers of the SFM23, viz. Life Running Assisi with the support of the communication agency KoloradoOn Sunday, 5 November, they will launch a special initiative: athletes at the start will be able to donate the clothing with which they have sheltered from the cold - sweatshirts, tracksuits, jumpers - and which will be collected and donated to various associations that help the less fortunate.

The event was presented Monday 30 October at the Salon d'Honour of Palazzo Donini in Perugia. "I Bless You Life'I bless you, I bless you life: this is the manifesto that accompanies the San Francesco Marathon from its start, which, along its 42 km and 195 m, will touch three places linked to the Poverello: Assisi, Spello and Cannara before arriving on the esplanade of the Basilica of St Mary of the Angels. In addition to the marathon, two other sporting events were planned: a 10K very fast and the walk "Come with me', an event that more than any other tries to unite running and solidarity. The entry fee will contribute to support projects for the most fragile people.
Registration: quota 1,800 participants
The response from runners was exceptional: around 900 registered for the 42K, more than 600 for the 10K and over 230 for the Vieni con me (for the latter event, registration remains open until Saturday 4 November). This result demonstrates the interest in an event of an international nature: there are several athletes competing who come from outside Italy. During the press conference, the official jerseys for the three competitions and the medals for the marathon and the 10K were also presented.
The programme: three days of events and the Village at Casa Leonori.

A special gift: Afrika Bread.
This year there is another special initiative for all SFM participants: a gift that embodies the values of the event, the Afrika Bread. Afrika Bread is a unique product, created from a combination of highly nutritious ingredients of exceptional quality. But what really makes this bread special is its processing, which takes place naturally and spontaneously with controlled temperatures and a double leavening process. The bread is produced by a small local company in Rome that makes it in modest quantities, but has a great mission. Pane Afrika is designed not only as a food for athletes, but also to be sent to places where bread is a scarce commodity. The Pane Afrika will be delivered to the athletes at the San Francesco Marathon Village: an important signal and an opportunity to make a difference in the world, just as St Francis taught.

The San Francesco Marathon has always been much more than just a race. In addition to excitement and challenge, the marathon is an event that celebrates the essence of St. Francis of Assisi, promoting fraternity, solidarity and respect for nature. This year, we have a special novelty for all marathon participants, a gift that embodies these values and opens a new chapter in the distribution of the race pack: the Afrika Bread.
Nutrient ingredients
Afrika Bread is a unique product, created with a combination of highly nutritious ingredients of exceptional quality. Its composition includes a variety of seeds such as linseed, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, soya protein and apple fibre. But what really makes this bread special is its processing, which takes place naturally and spontaneously with controlled temperatures and double leavening.
This process gives Afrika Bread not only an exceptional taste, but also extraordinary digestibility. The right harmony between nutritional values and taste makes it ideal for athletes and line-conscious people. It is a concentrate of energy and recovery, perfect for the challenge of the San Francesco Marathon.
A mission: solidarity
The name 'Afrika' is a tribute to the importance of bringing solidarity and help where it is most needed. The bread is produced by a small local company in Rome that makes it in modest quantities, but has a great mission. Pane Afrika is designed not only as a food for athletes, but also to be sent to places where bread is a scarce commodity.
Including Afrika Bread in the race pack of the San Francesco Marathon is an important signal: it is not only a race, but an opportunity to make a difference in the world, just as St Francis taught us.
Afrika bread has no customised packaging, because when it is produced in large quantities, it is prepared and baked and then immediately blast chilled and frozen. This ensures that the bread retains all its properties and characteristics of a freshly baked product. It will be distributed in 5 kg packs, and on the day of the marathon, it will be delivered to participants in special bakery bread bags, still warm.

With the support of Athletica Vaticana
The Bread Afrika project is enthusiastically supported by Vatican Athletics as part of the culture of fraternity that guarantees everyone the food they need. This initiative is an example of how sport can be an instrument of solidarity, helping those in need. The San Francesco Marathon, with its Franciscan inspiration, is the perfect place to promote these values.
This year, the Saint Francis Marathon is not only a race, but also a symbol of solidarity and brotherhood. Thanks to Pane Afrika, we can run for a greater cause, spreading St Francis' message of love, help and care for others. Whether you are an athlete or a lover of good food, Pane Afrika is a gift that will bring nourishment, joy and hope to all. Run with your heart and enjoy every bite of Pane Afrika along the St Francis Marathon route.
