Wednesday 15 February marks the official opening of registration for the San Francesco Marathon 2023, which will take place between Assisi, Spello and Cannara Sunday 5 November 2023. The event will be the culmination of a long organisational effort to unite sport, friendship and fraternity under Franciscan values.

'I Bless You Life' is the message that will be launched at an international event.

Aimed at professional athletes, amateurs and families, the 2023 edition of the San Francesco Marathon consists of three events:

  • the 42.195 km competitive marathon
  • the competitive 10.2 km
  • and the "Come with me!" A 5 km family trail.

The route of the San Francesco Marathon 2023 will take place between Assisi Spello and Cannara, retracing the main places of the Saint's life. The route has been designed to bring athletes into contact with the beauty of Umbria and to immerse them in a unique setting. The finish of the marathon is planned in front of the esplanade of the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli.

Values and Purpose

The marathon was born as a project of solidarity, inclusion, environmental sustainability and the Gospel is its main source of inspiration.

One of the aims of the marathon is to help the weakest with solidarity projects that will be chosen by an ethics committee. Another aim is to enhance the artistic, landscape and cultural heritage of Assisi and Umbria.

Organisation

The San Francesco Marathon is organised by Life Running Assisi, a non-profit amateur sports club affiliated with CONI and Fidal and chaired by Father Federico Claure. The general manager of the event is lawyer Gian Luca Mazzocchio and the technical organisation is by the Kolorado agency.

Within the organisation there will be:

  • an ethics committee to define solidarity projects
  • a scientific committee to develop areas of participation, research and innovation related to the event

The San Francesco Marathon is co-organised with the city of Assisi, enjoys the patronage of the Diocese of Assisi - Nocera Umbra - Gualdo Tadino and the National Office for Leisure Time, Tourism and Sport of the Italian Bishops' Conference, and is held in cooperation with Athletica Vaticana.

Father Federico Claure, president of the organisation, said: 'Running in one of the most beautiful places in the world! Running in an open-air sanctuary, where beauty conveys a message without the need for words, where spirituality and silence are also companions for walking and running in a unique setting!

The San Francesco Marathon is a sports and cultural project, because sport is educational, in its etymological sense, it brings out the best in us!

We look forward to seeing you in Assisi for a moment that will be unforgettable in a lifetime!"
