How to get to Assisi by TRAIN
For those coming from the North the main line is the one between Florence and Rome, which has a station at Terontola (branch line between Lake Trasimeno, Perugia, Assisi, Spello and Foligno).
Those coming from Florence must take one of the daily trains to Terontola/Cortona (1 or 2 hr.), which connect with a train to Assisi / S.Maria degli Angeli (45 to 60 min. journey).
For those from the South, the main route is Rome and Ancona and has a station in Foligno (on the Spello, Assisi, Perugia and Lake Trasimeno branch line). Those coming from Rome can take one of the many daily trains on the Ancona line, stop in Foligno, where they can then transfer to a regional train to Perugia (10 to 15 min.).
Please note. The reference station for those coming to Assisi is Santa Maria degli Angeli, about 3 km from the historic centre. Buses take 20-30 minutes to reach the city centre. Bus services leave from the square in front of the station and take passengers to Piazza Matteotti.
How to get to Assisi by PLANE
The San Francesco d'Assisi Airport is the best solution, but in this case it is good to check the active connections that are often seasonal.
Otherwise, the nearest major airports in central Italy are:
- Rome;
- Ancona;
- Florence.
These three airports make it easy to reach Assisi using rail or road connections after arriving by plane.
The main international connecting airport is Fiumicino, Leonardo da Vinci Airport.

Then there is theAirport A. Vespucci of Florence which has both domestic, international and intercontinental flights.
Finally, theAncona Airport which has several European and national connections.
As we said, after landing it is advisable to continue to Assisi by bus or train. For example, there are daily bus connections from Rome Fiumicino Airport (International departure Terminal 'C') and Assisi (Piazza San Pietro).
How to get to Assisi by Car
Those coming from the north along the A14 on the Adriatic coast, you must exit the motorway at Cesena, then take the E45 to Città di Castello and at the Collestrada junction take the SS75. Exit at Santa Maria degli Angeli and follow for Assisi.
The best exit for Assisi on the A1 motorway for those coming from the north is ValdichianaFrom here, take the Perugia-Bettolle junction, entering the SS75bis that overlooks Lake Trasimeno until you reach the Umbrian capital. From Perugia, continue past Ponte San Giovanni, joining the SS75 at Collestrada and then exit at Santa Maria degli Angeli and follow the signs for Assisi.
From the south, the best A1 motorway exit is Orte which is linked to Perugia by the SS204 (towards Terni) first, and the E45 (or SS3bis) from Terni to Perugia then. Before arriving in Perugia, follow the signs for Ponte San Giovanni and then those for Assisi, taking the SS75 at Collestrada. Then exit at Santa Maria degli Angeli and follow the signs for Assisi.
How to get to Assisi by BUS
The bus is an excellent alternative to the train thanks also to the presence of several companies that operate direct connections from various Italian cities. For example, FlixBus has direct connections to Assisi from Florence (journey time 2:30 hours), Rome (3 hours), Pescara (3:40 hours), Naples (6 hours), Milan (6:45 hours) and Bari (7:45 hours).
