On Wednesday, February 15th, registration officially opens for the San Francesco Marathon 2023, which will take place between Assisi, Spello, and Cannara on Sunday, November 5th, 2023. The event will be the culmination of a long organizational effort aimed at uniting sports, friendship, and fraternity under Franciscan values.

"I Bless You Life" is the message that will be launched on the occasion of an international event. The San Francesco Marathon 2023 is aimed at professional athletes, amateurs, and families and consists of three events:

  • The competitive marathon of 42.195 km
  • The 10.2 km competition
  • The "Come with me!" A 5 km course for families.

The San Francesco Marathon 2023 route will run between Assisi, Spello, and Cannara, retracing the main places of the Saint's life. The course was designed to connect athletes with the beauty of Umbria and immerse them in a unique context in the world. The marathon finish is expected in front of the esplanade of the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli.

The marathon was born as a project of solidarity, inclusion, environmental sustainability, and the Gospel is its main source of inspiration. One of the purposes that the marathon aims to achieve is also to help the weakest with solidarity projects chosen by an ethical committee. Another aim is to enhance the artistic, landscape, and cultural heritage of Assisi and Umbria.

Organization

The San Francesco Marathon is organized by Life Running Assisi, a non-profit amateur sports association affiliated with Coni and Fidal and chaired by Father Federico Claure. The event's general director is lawyer Gian Luca Mazzocchio, and the technical organization is handled by the Kolorado agency. Within the organization, there will be an ethical committee, called to define solidarity projects, and a scientific committee to elaborate participation, research, and innovation related to the event.

The San Francesco Marathon is co-organized with the city of Assisi, enjoys the patronage of the Diocese of Assisi - Nocera Umbra - Gualdo Tadino and the National Office of Leisure, Tourism, and Sport of the Italian Episcopal Conference, and is held in collaboration with Athletica vaticana.

Participants in the San Francesco Marathon, by purchasing the bib, also contribute to solidarity projects that will be identified and made public during the approach to the event within the official website of the event.
